Grande Premiere 2018

Saturday night saw the Richard Robinson Fashion Design Academy hold its annual Grande Premiere fashion show showcasing the offerings of the first year and graduating (second year) students as well as a kick off by Richard Robinson himself.

The evening started with Haute Couture Collection from Richard Robinson followed by a crowd favourite of dogs ready for adoption in a segment called “From Rescue to Runway” by All Paws Matter. Then it was the turn of the first years to show designer dresses followed by the graduating students’ collections. After the intermission the crowd was treated to winter jackets (I guess we missed summer), bustiers, more graduating student collections, and then a nod to the Russian Revolution for the History of Costume section. At the end, awards were presented for several categories including Model of the Year and Most Promising 1st Year Designer among others. All awards were voted on by a judge of industry experts based on the offerings of the show.

The clothes varied from what I would consider ball gowns (some very nice) up to a young man wearing a dress and a bustier. There was lingerie to swimsuits on the skimpier side and everything in between. Unfortunately, other than one sweatsuit, there were no men’s clothing on display that I can remember although there were a couple of men designers. Oh well, I guess I’ll have to wait until next year to see what I should wear.
